There is a general misunderstanding amongst new members, and some not so new, as to the responsibility of the marker. The marker is there to centre the jack and make sure that the jack is within the length acceptable under law 28 of the game, i.e. full length jack should be 2 metres from the ditch and that it is a minimum of 23 metres from the mat line. The marker should stand behind the jack and to one side. He / she shall answer specific questions regarding the head while a player is in possession of the rink. The marker must not volunteer information. For example, to the question, "who is holding?" the answer should be something like - "you" or "against you". "You are and it is this wood which is 2 feet in front" is not acceptable! The marker must mark touchers. The marker must not move jack or Bowls until the score for the end has been determined by the players. IT IS NOT THE DUTY OF THE MARKER TO INDICATE THE RESULT OF THE END. The marker shall measure where necessary, but it is the decision of the players to agree the score. The Marker will maintain the score card and ensure that the card is signed in accordance with the rules. For the wording of the Laws, go to: Duties of Marker |
